IIM Shillong graduates embrace tradition in Ryndia Silk at 16th convocation

Shillong, April 4: Draped in the elegant hues of ‘Ryndia’ eri silk, a fabric deeply woven into the cultural fabric of Meghalaya, the graduating students of IIM Shillong embodied tradition and heritage on their momentous day. Recently awarded the Geographical Indication (GI) tag, Ryndia silk is a symbol of resilience and the rich artisanal legacy of the Northeast. As they walked the convocation stage, their attire was more than just ceremonial; it was a tribute to the indigenous craftsmanship and sustainable ethos of the region.

IIM Shillong celebrated its 16th Annual Convocation on April 4 marking a momentous occasion in the Institute’s academic calendar. The ceremony witnessed the conferment of degrees upon 475 graduating students, including 381 from the Post Graduate Programme (PGP) 2023–25 batch, 54 from the Post Graduate Programme for Executives (PGPEx) 2024–25 batch, and 35 from the Post Graduate Programme for Working Executives (PGPWE) 2023–25 batch. In addition, five scholars were awarded the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree.

The convocation was graced by the presence of Conrad K. Sangma, Chief Minister of Meghalaya, as the Chief Guest, and Ashish Modi, President, Honeywell India, as the Guest of Honour.

Shishir Kumar Bajoria, Chairman of the Board of Governors, IIM Shillong acknowledged the dedication, perseverance, and hard work of students throughout their academic journey. He noted that the Ryndia silk attire was a testament to the cultural richness of the region and urged the graduates to shoulder social responsibility, uphold the nation’s values, and become active contributors in realizing the vision of Viksit Bharat @2047.

‘Life is a marathon, don’t allow anything to distract you’: Conrad to IIM students

Delivering the Convocation Address, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma urged young graduates to approach life as a marathon — one that requires perseverance, resilience, and commitment to their passions.

“This is a marathon. Don’t allow anything to distract you. As you move forward in life, you will face different situations and challenges. This is an important transition, and how you navigate it will define your journey,” he said.

Ashish Modi, President, Honeywell India, shared five important life lessons. First, he encouraged the students to stay hungry and work hard, assuring them that success will follow. Second, he emphasized the importance of speaking up and advised students not to be passengers in their own lives. Third, he urged them to strive to be the best at whatever they choose to do. Fourth, he highlighted the critical role of effective communication in professional and personal growth. Finally, he underscored the significance of health—both physical and mental—as a foundation for a fulfilling life and career.
