Shillong, Nov 26: Experts at an IIM Shillong RoundTable on “Impact of Unrest in Bangladesh and Myanmar on India” have called for collaborative efforts among government agencies, civil society, and international stakeholders to address the challenges comprehensively.
Participants underscored the necessity of integrated strategies to achieve long-term peace, stability, and prosperity in India’s Northeast and the broader region.
The event held on November 25 featured a keynote address by Lieutenant General Rana Pratap Kalita, Former General Officer Commanding, Eastern Command, Indian Army. He offered a deep dive into the intricate challenges arising from the ongoing instability in India’s neighboring countries and its implications for national security and regional dynamics.
Discussions explored the far-reaching impact of unrest in Bangladesh and Myanmar, examining issues such as immigration, drug trafficking, and the misuse of the Free Movement Regime along the India-Myanmar border. The unique geographical vulnerabilities of the Northeast Region (NER)—which shares 99% of its borders with five countries—were highlighted as a key factor amplifying the region’s exposure to external instability.
The dialogue also examined the socio-economic opportunities presented by regional connectivity projects such as the India-Myanmar-Thailand Trilateral Highway. These initiatives were recognized as transformative for local economies, with potential to drive employment and development, while emphasizing the need for secure and stable borders to sustain such growth.
Lieutenant General Kalita emphasized the importance of a dual approach combining robust security measures with sustainable development. He stressed the role of civil society organizations in fostering social welfare, particularly in healthcare and education, while aiding in monitoring security issues.
The event fostered collaboration among experts, policymakers, and stakeholders, setting the stage for actionable strategies to address the Northeast’s complex challenges and strengthen India’s regional relations.
