Guwahati, Mar 26: The Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati has successfully transferred technology to BioMed Pvt. Ltd. to produce India’s first recombinant vaccine against classical swine fever. The vaccine is developed through collaboration between IIT Guwahati and Assam Agricultural University.
The vaccine utilizes an innovative reverse genetic platform for highly contagious viruses, employing the Newcastle disease virus as a carrier for crucial proteins of the swine fever virus.
The method ensures swift and cost-effective immunity development. The vaccine’s technology transfer to BioMed Pvt. Ltd, who are a leading manufacturing company specialising in high quality vaccines, is a milestone in India’s fight against the disease, which currently lacks a vaccine.
The highly contagious disease threatens pigs across India, especially in the northeast and other Indian states like Bihar, Kerala, Punjab, Haryana, and Gujarat.
