Guwahati, Sept 11: Students at IIT Guwahati continued their protests for the second consecutive day on Tuesday, demanding the resignation of certain faculty members they accuse of putting severe ‘mental pressure’ on students.
The unrest follows the suicide of a third-year Computer Science Engineering student, who was found dead in his hostel room on Sunday night. This is the second such incident in a month and the fourth death at the institute this year.
The students have vowed to continue their demonstrations until their demands for the faculty members’ resignations are met.
On Tuesday, they also staged a large-scale protest and a candlelight vigil in memory of their fellow student.
Subsequent talks with the authorities, including an open house discussion, failed to break the deadlock.
In addition to the resignations, students have threatened to boycott upcoming examinations if their concerns are not addressed.
Meanwhile, Professor Devendra Jalihal, the Director of IIT Guwahati, has assured the students that their grievances will be considered and has urged them to return to their classes.
