Shillong, Nov 4: IIT-Guwahati has submitted its safety audit report on the Bridge Over Spillway of the Umiam Concrete Dam, which has been an issue of concern over its load bearing capacity, of late.

In the report, IIT-Guwahati has recommended that “Heavy-loaded vehicles should not be permitted until retrofitting of distressed members (i.e girder beam and deck slab) and that the maximum permissible load of the bridge is 15 MT.”

Following the receipt of the report, the Under Secretary to the Government of Meghalaya (power department) has shot an urgent letter to the Commissioner & Secretary of the Transport Department, urging it to revise its Standing Order and restrict heavy loaded vehicles with gross weight of over 20 MT to 15 MT.
