Shillong, May 16: The district administration of Ri-Bhoi on Friday ordered the immediate closure of a newly set-up toll gate by the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) along National Highway-06 at Umdihar.
Authorities took the step after finding that the toll gate was erected without proper authorisation and was collecting up to ₹200 per goods-laden truck passing through this gate.
The toll gate, set up by KHADC’s Trade Department, was reported to have started operating just a few days ago has raised questions about whether it had received necessary approval from the Executive Committee of the Voice of the People Party (VPP)-led KHADC.

According to district officials, any structure or toll gate installed along a national highway requires prior permission from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), Government of India.
Speaking to reporters, Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal confirmed the action, stating that the KHADC had bypassed the required permissions while setting up the gate, especially along a national highway.
Ri Bhoi DC further clarified that no individual or organisation is allowed to set up toll collection points on national highways or even PWD roads without clearance from the relevant authorities.
