IMD issues forecast of heavy rainfall in Assam till July 5

Shillong, July 01: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a special weather bulletin forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall in Assam from July 1 to 5 in Assam. The Regional Meteorological centre in Guwahati has issued an orange alert, indicating moderate rain to likely occur at most places in Assam, with isolated thunderstorm and lightning.

The Northern Limit of Monsoon is currently passing through specific coordinates which is at 26°N/65°E, Jaisalmer, Churu, Hissar, Kurukshetra, Rajpura, Ludhiana, and 31.2°N/74.5°E.

Additionally, a cyclonic circulation over northeast Assam and its neighbourhood persists at 1.5 km above mean sea level. These synoptic conditions, combined with moisture incursion from the Bay of Bengal due to strong southerly/south-westerly winds in the lower levels, are expected to result in widespread rainfall across the region.

Notable rainfall recorded up to now stands at:
Gossaigaon in Kokrajhar district received 20 cm of rainfall, Jiagaon in Tinsukia district received 15 cm, Hazuah in Barpeta district received 14 cm, Majuli in Jorhat district received 13 cm, Kokrajhar in Kokrajhar district received 13 cm and Ranganadi Nt Xing in Lakhimpur district received 12 cm

District wise warning for Assam from July 1 to 5 

July 2nd, 2024:
Moderate rainfall is expected in Goalpara, Bongaigaon, West Karbi Anglong, and Dima Hasao districts. Thunderstorms with lightning and isolated heavy rain are likely in Jorhat, Tinsukia, Cachar, Hailakandi, and Karimganj districts, Barpeta, Nalbari, Karbi Anglong, Majuli, Sibsagar, Charaideo, Dibrugarh.

July 3rd, 2024:
Most places in Dhubri and Chirang districts are likely to experience moderate rainfall with isolated heavy to very heavy rain. Thunderstorms with lightning and isolated heavy rain are expected in Goalpara, Kamrup(R ), Biswanath, Majuli, Dima Hasao.

July 4th, 2024:
Kokrajhar, Chirang, Baksa, Barpeta, Bongaigaon, Nalbari, Udalguri, Biswanath, Lakhimpur, and Dhemaji districts are likely to witness moderate rainfall with isolated heavy to very heavy rain. Moderate rainfall is expected in areas of Dhubri, South Salmara, Goalpara, Bajali, Tamulpur, Kamrup(R),Kamrup(M ), Darrang, Morigaon, Nowgaon, Hojai, West Karbi Anglong, Golaghat, Sonitpur, Jorhat, Majuli, Sibsagar, Charaideo, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia & Dima Hasao districts. Thunderstorms with lightning and isolated heavy rain are anticipated in other areas.

July 5th, 2024:
Moderate rainfall is expected in most places, with isolated heavy to very heavy rain over West Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao districts. Thunderstorms with lightning and isolated heavy rain are likely in additional districts including Dhubri, Barpeta, Kamrup, and others.

The IMD has issued several warnings and advisories for Assam, urging residents to prepare for potential impacts:
• Poor visibility due to intense rainfall spells.
• Temporary traffic disruptions from waterlogging.
• Damage to kutcha roads and vulnerable structures.
• Waterlogging in low-lying areas.
• Possible landslides or land slips.
• Damage to standing crops and vegetables.
• Lightning risks to people and cattle in open areas.
• Soil dispersion and seed displacement affecting crop germination.

Actions Suggested
• Follow any traffic advisories
• Avoid going to areas that face water logging problem often
• Avoid staying in landslide prone areas.
• Take shelter during thunderstorm/lightning activities.
• Provide mulch at the base of the crop to prevent soil and root damage.
• Avoid working in the fields during thunderstorm/lightning.
• Postpone sowing of rice, jute, maize and vegetables seeded area with natural mulching materials like straw, farm residues etc.

India’s monthly outlook for rainfall and temperature during July 2024

During July, normal to above normal rainfall is most likely over most parts of the country except many parts of northeast India and some parts of northwest, east and southeast peninsular India where below-normal rainfall is likely.

Above-normal maximum temperatures are likely over many parts of central India, east and northeast India and along west coast.
