Impressive talents on display at Garo Hills Open Basketball tourney, quarter finals next week

Tura, July 21: The league matches of the All Garo Hills Open Basketball Tournament (AGHOBT) concluded on Friday.

The tournament commenced on July 15, 2023, at Christian Girls High School in Tura, West Garo Hills District.

Organized by the Te•Tengkol Youth Club (TYC) in collaboration with the District Basketball Association, Tura, the tournament has garnered immense enthusiasm from both players and spectators.

A total of 21 teams, comprising 14 men’s teams and 7 women’s teams, are part of the AGHOBT, showcasing their skills and sportsmanship on the court. The competition has witnessed intense clashes, with Friday marking the conclusion of the league matches.

The quarter-finals, set to commence next week, promise to escalate the excitement even further, with spectators eagerly awaiting to see which teams will advance to the semi-finals. However, the dates for the finals are yet to be announced by the organizers.

Lenin M Sangma, Secretary of the TYC, expressed his optimism about the tournament, stating, “This tournament will bring out the best players for the upcoming Meghalaya Games.”

TYC also plans to organize inter-school and inter-college tournaments later in the year, to scout for the best of basketball talents from the region which can represent Garo Hills at State and national level.

The AGHOBT has not only captured the attention of the local community but has also received considerable support from various stakeholders. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma’s sponsorship, alongside the District Administration of West Garo Hills, has been instrumental in ensuring the smooth execution of the tournament and providing the necessary resources for a successful sporting event.

As the AGHOBT progresses to its final stages, basketball enthusiasts eagerly anticipate the upcoming quarter-finals and the eventual grand finale, the dates of which are yet to be announced.
