Tura, July 29: The Inter-School Basketball Tournament kicked off in Tura at the Christian Girls’ Higher Secondary School’s basketball court on Monday.
Organised by the District Basketball Association under the aegis of Meghalaya Basketball Association, Shillong in collaboration with the District Sports Office, Tura, the tournament garnered immense enthusiasm from both players and spectators.
The tournament is being played on a knockout basis with the teams competing for the coveted trophy and certificate.
Slated for conclusion on August 2, a total of 11 teams, comprising of 7 boys’ teams and 4 girls’ teams, are part of the tourney, showcasing their skills and sportsmanship on the court.
In boys’ category, there are teams from – Don Bosco Junior College, Tura; Auxilium School, Tura; St. Xavier’s School, Tura; Don Bosco School, Rongkhon; Don Bosco School, Tura (Night shift), Tura; Bosco Mount, Tura; and Don Bosco School (Day shift), Tura.
In the girls’ category, there are teams from – St. Xaviers School, Tura; Don Bosco Junior College, Tura; Don Bosco School, Tura; and Christian Girls’ Higher Secondary School, Tura.
In the inaugural match, the Auxilium School, Tura played against St. Xavier’s School, Tura. Throughout the match, both the teams demonstrated their prowess, engaging in fierce competition. The Auxilium School boys team won the match with a landslide 52-14 victory.
The St. Xavier’s School team displayed great fighting spirit though they were at a slight disadvantage. Generally, in a basketball game a team has to have twelve players with seven players on the bench as substitutes and five players on the court, but the St. Xavier’s team only had six players in their team with just one player on the bench as substitute.
The reason behind holding such tourney at the Christian Girls Higher Secondary School was due to the lack of a dedicated basketball court in Tura. Despite the drawback, the association is trying their best at garnering young athletes from the district through organising such tournaments.
