New Delhi, Aug 31: For the first time in history, 9 new Supreme Court judges took oath on Tuesday. Chief Justice of India (CJI) NV Ramana administered the Oath of Office to the nine new Judges including 3 women at 10.30 am on Tuesday.
Of the new judges Justice Vikram Nath, Justice BV Nagarathna and Justice PS Narasimha are in line to become the Chief justice of India. This also means that Justice BV Nagarathna is in line to become the first woman CJI in September 2027.
Traditionally, new judges take the oath of office in the CJI’s Courtroom but due to the pandemic the swearing-in ceremony was held in the auditorium of the Supreme Court’s additional building complex.
President Ram Nath Kovind signed the warrants of their appointment as top court judges after the Supreme Court Collegium recommended the names of these nine judges on August 17.
Since its inception, the top court has seen very few women judges and has appointed only eight women judges in the last over 71 years starting from M Fathima Beevi in 1989. Justice Indira Banerjee is the only woman judge serving in the top court after her elevation on August 7, 2018.
The retirement age of Supreme Court judges is 65 while the retirement age of High Court judges is 62.
