Tura, July 8: The solemn funeral service for the first bishop of the Diocese of Tura, Bishop George Mamalassery, was held on Monday at the Sacred Heart Shrine, Tura.
Following the service, the bishop’s mortal remains will be laid to rest in the Cathedral of Mary Help of Christians Church, Tura.
The Holy Mass was led by Bishop Andrew R. Marak, with Archbishop Victor Lyngdoh of Shillong Diocese and Bishops from Northeast and other dioceses, priests, sisters and brothers, and church leaders from other denominations attending the funeral service.
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, along with his wife Mehtab Chandee, Former Chief Minister Mukul Sangma, and members of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council attended the funeral.
People gathered in the premises of the Sacred Heart Shrine, filling all available spaces to bid adieu to the first Bishop of Tura, who had served in Garo Hills for over 54 years.
