Inclement Weather Hampers Power Restoration Efforts in Meghalaya: Sanjay Goyal

Must read

Shillong, May 29:Despite relentless efforts by the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL), severe weather conditions are hindering power restoration across Meghalaya. High-velocity winds have uprooted trees and electric poles, causing significant disruptions. MeECL staff and linemen are working tirelessly to restore electricity, even in difficult terrains, but full restoration remains challenging.

CMD MeECL, Sanjay Goyal, reported that while electricity has been restored in most major town areas, including parts of Tura, some pockets still face outages. The high winds continue to intermittently disrupt power supply.

Goyal also provided an update on the damage caused by Cyclone Remal. He acknowledged that preemptive measures taken by the State Government mitigated the extent of damage and saved lives, except for one tragic incident in the Jaintia Hills where a person lost life.

He further mentioned that according to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Cyclone Remal has crossed Meghalaya, and the current adverse weather is likely its remnants. Efforts are ongoing to fully restore power.

Notably, the IMD has predicted that the monsoon will hit the state in the first week of June this year.
