Tura, Aug 15: The 77th Independence Day was celebrated at Tura’s Matchakolgre LP school playground. Thomas A. Sangma, Speaker of Meghalaya Assembly was the chief guest and he was accompanied by his wife.
Other District heads and govt officials and important dignitaries were also present at the event. The newly appointed Tura SP, Abraham Sangma, was also present at the event.
The Independence Day celebration started with the hosting of the National flag followed by the inspection of the parade. During the event, Thomas A Sangma spoke on various developmental schemes.
Meanwhile, the parade contingent was commanded by Walsal Marak, DSP crime branch, Tura. The other contingents like NCC, Scouts, Guides and the Band party of 2nd MLP battalion also displayed their marching skills.
Many schools & colleges brought vibrancy to the event by their cultural programs.
The state literary award was given to Amindagre Village of West Garo Hills.
Awards were also given to Baitbari PHC and District Maternity Child Hospital Tura.
Appreciation awards were also distributed to many individuals from various government departments of West Garo Hills.
The Civil Defence department also showed how the rescue is done in natural calamities such as earthquake.
The Independence Day celebration ended with the chief guest visiting the health checkup camp and Adhaar camp, which was setup at the venue.
