Guwahati, Nov 7: India and Bhutan today opened a new chapter in deeper cooperation and strengthened regional ties with the inauguration of Darranga Immigration Check Post.
Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya called the inauguration a “historic moment,” signalling the beginning of a new era in regional friendship and collaboration. He noted that Assam’s strategic position could serve as a dynamic hub for facilitating greater trade, smoother transit, and cultural exchanges. “This check post will ease travel, foster trade, and cultural exchanges, and enhance strategic cooperation between India and Bhutan,” he said, emphasizing that the bonds between the two nations are deeply rooted in a shared heritage.
The collaboration demonstrated today sends a powerful message of unity and shared vision, further cementing the unique friendship between India and Bhutan.
Acharya inaugurated the Darranga Immigration Check Post today, alongside Bhutan’s Prime Minister, Daso Tshering Tobgay. Held in Tamulpur’s Darranga district, the event underscores the rising significance of Assam as a key player in Indo-Bhutan relations, reflecting both countries’ ambitions to leverage geographic proximity for mutual benefit.
The new checkpost is also a testament to India’s dedication to bolstering border infrastructure. It aims to streamline cross-border movement, unlocking opportunities for business and tourism that will benefit the local economy. Governor Acharya further highlighted cross-border connectivity initiatives, such as proposed rail links, which would lay the groundwork for future regional prosperity.
Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar and Union Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita were also present, along with dignitaries from both nations, reinforcing a collective commitment to propel Indo-Bhutan relations forward.
