Guwahati, May 7: In a powerful blend of military response and emotional symbolism, the Indian Army has named its retaliatory surgical strike against the recent Pahalgam terrorist attack “Operation Sindoor”—a title steeped in cultural significance and national resolve.
The operation was launched following the April 22 massacre in Pahalgam, where 26 unarmed civilians—all men—were brutally killed by terrorists. According to government sources, many of the victims were murdered in front of their wives. In a chilling act of psychological warfare, the attackers reportedly taunted the women, saying: “Tell Modi that we have wiped away your sindoor.”

In Indian tradition, sindoor (vermilion) is a sacred symbol of a woman’s marital status, applied in parting her hair after marriage. Removing or losing sindoor, especially through widowhood, carries profound emotional weight. The terrorists’ deliberate reference to sindoor was not only a threat but an assault on cultural identity and womanhood.
Deeply moved by the cruelty inflicted upon the women and the symbolic targeting of their dignity, Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally suggested naming the counter-offensive “Operation Sindoor.” The Army accepted the proposal, giving the operation a name that resonates beyond the battlefield.
“Operation Sindoor is not just about neutralising terrorists,” said a senior official. “It’s a message: India will not let the pain and humiliation of its citizens go unanswered.”
