Shillong, July 21: In response to the escalating unrest in Bangladesh, India has announced to keep its borders open round-the-clock to facilitate the safe entry of Indian nationals and citizens of other countries stranded due to ongoing violent protests.

This decision comes as part of a coordinated effort to ensure the well-being and safe passage of individuals affected by the turmoil across the border.

BSF sources have confirmed that the border will be accessible 24 hours a day, allowing continuous movement of students and others seeking to return to India.

The protests, triggered by a contentious quota system for government jobs, have caused widespread disruption and instability in Bangladesh over the past three weeks. The volatile situation has necessitated immediate and decisive action from Indian authorities to safeguard their nationals.

The High Commission of India in Dhaka, along with the Assistant High Commissions in Chittagong, Rajshahi, Sylhet, and Khulna, is actively assisting in the repatriation efforts. These diplomatic missions are working closely with local authorities in Bangladesh to facilitate safe travel to the border crossing points along the India-Bangladesh International Border. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) is also coordinating with civil aviation, immigration, land ports, and BSF authorities to ensure a smooth passage for returning citizens.

As of now, over 1000 Indian students have successfully returned through various land ports, and around 200 students have flown back via regular flights from Dhaka and Chittagong airports. The High Commission and Assistant High Commissions are in continuous contact with over 4,000 students still in various universities across Bangladesh, providing necessary assistance and guidance. Additionally, students from Nepal and Bhutan have also been assisted in their crossing into India upon request.
