Shillong, Oct 15: The Ministry of Defence on Tuesday inked a contract with the US Government for Tri-Service procurement of 31 MQ-9B Sky/Sea Guardian High Altitude Long Endurance (HALE) Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS).
The MQ-9B Predator drone is a variant of the MQ-9 ‘Reaper’ developed by GA-ASI and is categorised as a high-altitude, long-endurance unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).
The drone can fly for 40 hours at a time at altitudes over 40,000 feet. It has an external payload capacity of 2,155 kg.
The deal is a mega Rs 32,000 crore (almost USD 4 billion) for acquiring these 31 long-endurance drones from American.
Another contract signed with General Atomics Global India Pvt Ltd was for Performance Based Logistics for these RPAS through Depot Level Maintenance, Repair & Overhaul in India.
