Indian govt confirms ceasefire violation, tells Pakistan to deal with the situation with seriousness

Must read

Shillong, May 10: India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri issued a sharp rebuke to Pakistan on Saturday night, following the violation of ceasefire by Pakistan along the International Border and the Line of Control (LoC). The breach reportedly occurred just hours after both countries committed to halting cross-border military actions.

“We call upon Pakistan to take immediate and appropriate steps to address these violations and approach the situation with seriousness and responsibility,” Misri said during a press briefing at the Ministry of External Affairs.

He confirmed that Pakistan had violated the ceasefire repeatedly across multiple sectors post announcing truce. “For the last few hours, there have been repeated violations of the understanding between the Director General of Military Operations of India and Pakistan. This is a breach of the understanding having arrived at earlier today,” he said mentioning that India was taking “very serious notice to these violations.”

He also informed that the armed forces are maintaining a strong vigil on the situation and giving “giving an adequate and appropriate response to these violations.” “They (Indian Armed Forces) have been given instructions to deal strongly with any instances of repetition of the violations of borders along the international border as well as the Line of Control (LoC),” he added.

A BSF Sub Inspector, Md Imteyaz, was also martyred in the line of duty during cross-border firing along the international boundary in the RS Pura sector, Jammu.

The ceasefire agreement had been dramatically announced on Saturday evening. It came after a phone call at 3:35 PM IST from Pakistan’s Director General of Military Operations to his Indian counterpart, proposing an end to hostilities. The ceasefire was to take effect from 5:00 PM IST the same day.

“It was agreed that both sides would cease all military operations on land, in the air, and at sea from 1700 hours IST,” Misri had stated earlier in the evening. “Instructions have been issued accordingly. The Director Generals of Military Operations will reconvene for further talks on May 12 at 12:00 noon.”

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar confirmed the agreement, reiterating that India remains steadfast in its stance against terrorism in all forms and will continue to respond firmly when necessary.

The ceasefire followed four days of intense conflict beginning May 7, during which Indian forces targeted multiple terrorist camps and military installations in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) and across the border. Pakistan had retaliated with heavy artillery and drone attacks across Jammu & Kashmir, Rajasthan, and Punjab, which were intercepted by Indian forces.

Adding to the dramatic developments, U.S. President Donald Trump announced shortly before India’s formal declaration that the United States had brokered the peace deal.

“After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE,” President Trump wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “Congratulations to both countries on using common sense and great intelligence.”

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio provided further details, stating that he and Vice President JD Vance had held 48 hours of intensive discussions with senior Indian and Pakistani officials, including Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Shehbaz Sharif.

“We commend Prime Ministers Modi and Sharif for choosing the path of peace,” Rubio wrote, adding that further dialogue on a broader range of issues is expected at a neutral location.

Post the announcement by the ceasefire, Commodore Raghu R. Nair stated that every misadventure by Pakistan has been met with strength and any future escalation will be met with a decisive response. “We remain fully operationally ready to undertake any operations required in defence of the nation,” he affirmed.
