India’s first aerostatic drone set to revolutionize surveillance and disaster response

Must read

Guwahati, April 22: A cutting-edge Aerostatic Drone has been unveiled by the North East Centre for Technology Application and Reach (NECTAR), an autonomous body under the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India.

Developed by Airbotix Technologies, Gurgaon, the drone is the first of its kind in India, promising a silent, energy-efficient, and highly versatile aerial solution.

Unveiled during a live demonstration organized by NECTAR, the drone captivated participants with its unique ability to stay airborne for over four hours using a combination of buoyancy and aerodynamics. Unlike conventional drones that rely on constant propulsion, this aerostatic marvel floats silently, offering persistent surveillance without drawing attention—ideal for sensitive operations like forest monitoring, wildlife tracking, and border security.

Equipped with both day and night vision cameras and thermal imaging technology, the drone can operate effectively even in low-visibility conditions. Its modular design means it can be mounted on ground vehicles or deployed as a standalone unit, adapting seamlessly to various terrains and missions. CRPF officials, impressed by its potential, showed particular interest in deploying it for operations along India’s challenging border zones.

Beyond security, the drone opens new possibilities in conservation and disaster response. Conservationists could track animal movements or assess forest health without disturbing habitats. Its stealth capabilities—being nearly invisible to radar—make it equally valuable for military intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) missions.

The drone also has potential civilian applications: as a communication relay in remote or disaster-hit areas, for monitoring crowds during public events, or to observe traffic patterns in congested cities. Officials from the Brahmaputra Board expressed enthusiasm about deploying the drone for monitoring civil infrastructure and flood-prone regions.

With minimal metal components, silent operation, and the ability to carry varied payloads—including anti-drone tech and telecom relays—this aerostatic drone is poised to set a new standard in India’s unmanned aerial systems.
