Shillong, May 3: In a case pointing towards lack of essential medical facilities in government hospitals in the state and also medical negligence, a new-born baby, delivered at Ganesh Das Hospital but referred to Nazareth hospital due to lack of ventilator support, died on Tuesday evening at Nazareth hospital, even as the mother remains in critical condition at NEIGRIHMS.
According to reports, the baby was delivered at Ganesh Das Hospital on May 1. But after becoming unwell, the baby was referred to Nazareth hospital as Ganesh Das Hospital does not have ventilator support, a hospital that specialises in maternal and child health.
The new born died on Tuesday evening at Nazareth hospital. The reasons for the death are not known.
Also, the mother developed complications soon after the delivery, and was referred to NEIGRIHMS the same day. The mother, identified as Patlima Rani, had a piece of needle stuck inside her near the kidney during the course of delivery at Ganesh Das Hospital. Due to lack of proper facilities, the doctors were unable to retrieve the needle and referred her to NEIGRIHMS the same day to avoid complications. Rani is presently in NEIGRIHMS undergoing treatment.
Meanwhile, the relatives of the patient have alleged negligence on the part of Ganesh Das Hospital but the hospital authorities have denied them.
