Inland Waterways Authority of India signs MoU with J&K Government to develop cruise tourism

Guwahati, Mar 6: The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Jammu and Kashmir to develop cruise tourism on three national waterways in the union territory on Thursday.

This initiative aims to boost tourism, create employment opportunities, stimulate economic growth, and provide a new mode of leisure and budget-friendly tourism along the region’s rivers.

The Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal attended the MoU signing ceremony.

As part of the project, IWAI will install 10 floating jetties and develop both on-shore and off-shore facilities.

The Government of Jammu and Kashmir will provide land and road connectivity for on-shore facilities to enhance accessibility for cruise tourists.

Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the guidance of Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, IWAI has undertaken multiple infrastructure projects to develop India’s waterways into a key driver of economic growth.

The authority is expanding its reach across the country, from Arunachal Pradesh to Gujarat and Jammu & Kashmir to Kerala.

Sarbananda Sonowal praised the initiative, highlighting its role in transforming the region’s economic landscape.

By integrating J&K into India’s growing network of inland waterways, we are opening new avenues for trade, employment, and connectivity that will uplift local communities and showcase the natural beauty of this region to the world,” said Sonowal.
