Tura, Sept 23: With the conclusion of the inter-Mahari football tournament in Tura last week, there is another inter-Mahari competition around the corner. While the football was ‘turf war’ to decide the best footballing side in Garo Hills, this time the competition moves to the world of water as it will be the ‘water war’ in the swimming pool.
The West Garo Hills District Swimming Association (WGHDSA) along with the District Sports Office will be conducting the 1st Inter-Mahari Swimming Championship on October 25-26, 2024, at the Tura Swimming Complex near Durama College in Megonggre near Ronghkon Tura.
Swimmers will compete in various events like 25 meters, 50 meters, 100 meters, Freestyle, Butterfly, Backstroke among others in two broad categories – below 18 years and above 18 years, for both men and women.
The forms for the event can be availed from the Swimming Complex near Durama College in Rongkon and the District Sports Office in Daokpgre by paying Rs. 100.
Speaking to Hub News, Sengrak D. Marak, VP of WGHDSA, said, “The main reason to organize this competition is to identify local potential swimmers in the inter-Mahari championship and send the best to the upcoming Meghalaya Games, which are to be held in 2025 in Jowai.”
He shared that most of the swimmers know how to swim but they lack the basic technique when it comes to competing in tournaments and championships. The participants will be taught these techniques by trainers when they come to the pool for practice.
The WGHDSA will also give proper training to the participants before the competition with minimal fees.
Notably, the dilapidated Tura Swimming Complex was renovated before the Meghalaya Games 2024 held in Tura in the month of January this year. Post the state-level event, the pool has been opened for public access.
