Agartala, Nov 25: The Indian Olympic Association’s (IOA) Adhoc Committee for Tripura arrived in Agartala on Sunday for a 2-day visit to aimed at addressing alleged governance issues prevailing with the Tripura State Olympic Association (TSOA).
The committee is led by John F. Kharshiing, Working President of the Meghalaya State Olympic Association (MSOA) and Chairman of the IOA Adhoc Committee-Tripura, along with committee members Bamang Tago, Secretary General of the Arunachal Pradesh Olympic Association (APOA), and Robert R. Royte, President of the Mizoram Olympic Association.
The formation of the Adhoc Committee was announced earlier this month on November 8, by Dr. P.T. Usha, President of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), through an official order. The committee was constituted with the mandate to address and rectify issues within the TSOA, ensuring that athletes and sports associations across the state receive the support and representation they deserve.
The IOA Adhoc Committee’s primary responsibility is to consult with a wide range of stakeholders, including the TSOA office bearers, state sports associations, athletes, coaches, and officials from the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports, Tripura.
As part of their agenda, the committee has scheduled hearings on November 25 and 26 to engage with over 40 state sports associations. These associations have reportedly faced numerous challenges over the years, largely attributed to governance issues within the TSOA. Currently, Secretary General of the TSOA has been in hiding for the past seven months due to ongoing litigation and legal issues, with police reportedly on the lookout for him.
The IOA Adhoc Committee-Tripura, after a detailed review of the situation in Agartala, will submit a report to president Indian Olympic Association (IOA) with specific recommendations to enable the youths to participate in the next National Games and to also be able to send the young talents to national competitions for which the genuine athletes have been deprived for over 12 years.
