Tehran, June 28 : To replace the late president Ebarhim Raisi, who was killed in a helicopter crash last month, Iran goes into poll on Friday to select their new president.
A total of 6 candidates were said to contest in the Presidential Election however, two backed out leaving 4, namely, Mohamed Baqer Qalibaf, Saeed Jalili, Masoud Pezeshkian and Mostafa Poumohammadi battling to take over the throne.
Voting commenced at 8:00am (04:30 GMT) and is expected to close at 6pm (14:30 GMT).
Iranians face a hard choice between the candidate who have been termed as “little-know politicians” belonging to the Iran Reformist Movement. As polls open, there seems to be a mixed emotions on the streets of Tehran amidst the rising tension in the middle east over Israel-Hamas war in the Gaza strip.
Low turn outs have been recorded in the past election in Iran and the situation seems to be at the same pace even in this 14th presidential election too. Even though, as many as 61 million voters are eligible to vote inside and outside the country, voter turn out stands are a bare minimum of 48.6%, which would mark an new low, reported a local news website, Tasnim news.
As has been the case since 1979 Islamic Revolution, women and advocates for radical change have been prohibited from participating in the election and even prevented from running in elections.
Supreme power of all matters of the state lies in the hands of the 85year old leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, however, Presidents can influence the country’s policies towards confrontation or negotiation with the West.
Though not much of a competition is seen between contenders, nothing can be predicted in accuracy, votes seems to be leaning more towards Pezeshkian who is projected to finish close to 30% followed by Jalili at 18.8% and Qhalibaf at 16.8%.
