TURA, Oct 21: Lot of speculations are surfacing about possible chance of All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) leader and ex-chief minister Dr. Mukul Sangma contesting not just from Songsak, but another constituency as he did in the last 2018 elections when he won from both Songsak and Ampati, before handing over the Ampati seat to his daughter Miani D Shira who won the by-poll comfortably.
Speculations are rife that the former chief minister could repeat the same strategy of 2018, as he seems confident of his popularity, but this time he could probably contest from Tikrikilla and Songsak simultaneously, while leaving Ampati for his daughter and sitting legislator Miani D Shira.
Tikrikilla is currently held by Jimmy D Sangma, who won from Congress ticket but defected to Trinamool along with Mukul Sangma and 11 other legislators.
Jimmy has now turned into a rebel Trinamool legislator, like Mendipathar TMC MLA Marthon Sangma and Mawsynram legislator Himalaya Shangpliang with plans to contest from other parties in the ensuing elections.
Both Marthon and Jimmy are reportedly in close contact with the NPP and could be their candidates from their respective seats in 2023 Assembly polls.
Seeking confirmation about the likelihood of Mukul Sangma contesting from Tikrikilla, Hub News reached out to Tikrikilla MLA Jimmy D Sangma for his reaction.
“There are some movements taking place with my adversaries trying to convince Dr Mukul Sangma to contest against me in Tikrikilla. So far, it’s not confirmed, but nothing can be ruled out. He (Mukul) may contest to try and check my re-election and that of my brother Lemison from neighbouring Raksamgre,” expressed Jimmy Sangma.
Jimmy and his brother Lemison Sangma are former close members of Mukul Sangma before the ex-chief minister defected from the Congress to the Trinamool.
Jimmy had also gone alongside Mukul Sangma when the Congress got split, but in recent months has distanced himself from the West Bengal centric party of Mamata Bannerjee preferring to side with the ruling NPP.
