Shillong, Dec 4: The All Jaintia Muster Roll Workers and Labor Union (AJMRWLU) will take out a protest march to the Secretariat on December 17, against the state government’s failure to enhance the wages of the muster roll workers in the state.
According to the union, the Variable Dearness Allowance (VDA) should have been enhanced with effect from October 1, 2024 and the Floor Basic Rate (FBR), which is being increased once in every five years, with effect from October 1, 2023 as per the Minimum Wage Act
Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, spokesperson of AJMRWLU KL Pariat said that the demand is due to the price rise of essential commodities which has affected the income of the labourers.
Pariat said that for the last three years the Government has not increased the salary which should have been in every five years.
“The last salary increase was in 2018 and should have been increased again in 2023, but so far the State Government has not increased the salary and the Variable Dearness Allowance which should have been increased twice in a year,” said Pariat.
Pariat recalled that it was during the Union’s strike in 2018 that the State Government increased the salary. “Even now they have to hold a protest so that they can get their rights,” he added.
He said that the Union leaders have met with the Minister in charge of Labor and the Commissioner and Secretary of Labor to convey this demand but the union leaders have not received a positive response with regard to their demand.
