Shillong, May 13: The Jaintia Students’ Union (JSU) has strongly demanded that Jowai be declared the Summer Capital of Meghalaya, asserting that equal treatment must be extended to all three major indigenous communities of the state – the Jaintias, the Khasis, and the Garos.
The demand comes in response to discussions around granting Tura the status of Winter Capital. The Union argued that if Tura, representing the Garo Hills, is to be accorded a seasonal capital role, then Jowai, the heart of Jaintia Hills, must also be recognised in the same manner to ensure fairness and unity in the state.

In a statement issued by Neilkee Mukhim, General Secretary of the Jaintia Students’ Union – Central Body, the student body pointed out that the Jaintia Hills region continues to face serious development and infrastructure issues. It believes that making Jowai a seasonal capital would not only lead to more balanced development but also provide due political and administrative representation to the Jaintia community.
Warning against any one-sided decision, the JSU cautioned the government that excluding Jaintia Hills from such a major policy move would lead to public discontent. “If such disparity persists, the Jaintia Students’ Union, along with the people of the region, will be compelled to launch democratic protests and agitations to demand their rightful share,” the Union warned.
