Guwahati, March 28: Japan government is helping the Assam fisheries sector to develop sustainable fishery supply chains and improve livelihoods in Assam’s fisheries sector.
Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has signed a loan agreement worth 3,580 million Japanese Yen (approximately ₹209 crores) to support the Assam State Aquaculture Promotion and Livelihood Improvement Project. The initiative aims to enhance aquaculture production,
Aligning with India’s Act East Policy, the project seeks to leverage Assam’s abundant water resources to bridge the supply-demand gap, boost productivity, and strengthen fisheries’ infrastructure. The ODA loan agreement was signed between Ms. Manisha Sinha, Additional Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance, and Mr. TAKEUCHI Takuro, Chief Representative of JICA India.
Mr. TAKEUCHI Takuro highlighted the project’s impact, stating, “India’s fisheries sector is crucial for food security, employment, and economic growth but faces challenges like low productivity and inadequate infrastructure. This project will promote sustainable aquaculture, strengthen fish supply chains, and build technical capacity to improve livelihoods and ensure long-term economic growth.”
The project is set to directly benefit 15,600 fish farmers and stakeholders, while indirectly impacting over 10.84 million consumers. By 2031, it aims to increase aquaculture production from 2.9 tons/ha to 5.0 tons/ha, enhance farmer incomes, and promote sustainability.
The Directorate of Fisheries, Government of Assam, will oversee the project’s implementation. This initiative also aligns with Japan’s Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP) vision, reinforcing climate-resilient aquaculture, value chain development, and sustainable fisheries.
The agency said it remains committed to fostering inclusive growth and sustainable development in India’s fisheries sector.
