Guwahati, Dec 12: In a major breakthrough against terror networks, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and Assam Police’s Special Task Force (STF) have arrested Shahanur Alam, a suspected operative of the banned terrorist organization Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM), from Tukura in Assam’s Goalpara district.
The arrest is part of a larger nationwide crackdown led by the NIA, which launched coordinated raids across five states — Jammu & Kashmir, Assam, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and Gujarat. The operation targeted 19 locations, including several in Assam, highlighting the state’s growing role in counter-terror investigations.
Sources revealed that the raids aim to dismantle terrorist infrastructure, collect critical evidence, and curb extremist recruitment activities. Officials are also probing how suspects allegedly radicalized youth and inducted them into the JeM-inspired Jamaat outfit.
The intensified crackdown is seen as a strategic move to disrupt terror propaganda and recruitment networks. Assam has recently emerged as a focal point for counter-terror operations, with multiple locations being raided as part of the ongoing investigation.
The arrest of Shahanur Alam is expected to provide key insights into JeM’s activities in the region and its links to extremist elements operating across India.
