JN.1 Variant sparks concerns in the fight against COVID-19: Check symptoms here

Must read

New Delhi, Dec 22: A recently discovered variant of COVID-19, known as the JN.1 strain, has raised concerns among scientists due to its increased infectiousness compared to previous variants. This new strain was identified in a patient in Kerala, a 79-year-old woman who exhibited mild symptoms of Influenza Like Illness (ILI) but has since recovered.

The recently identified variant, termed Covid JN.1, is a lineage originating from the previous strain BA.2.86 or Pirola. Initially detected in the US in September of this year, seven subsequent cases were identified in China. Despite the apparent dissimilarity in naming between BA.2.86 and JN.1, these variants differ solely in their spike protein composition.

The signs of J.1 infection mimic mild flu symptoms and include mild gastrointestinal issues, based on observed cases of the J virus.

The symptoms of the J virus are as follows:

  • Runny nose
  • Watering eyes
  • Low-grade fever
  • Diahorrea
  • Nausea
  • Fatigue
  • Sore throat

How to get tested for COVID-19?

Rapid Antigen Test:

This test uses a nasal swab and provides quick results, usually within 15-30 minutes. It is effective in detecting the presence of viral proteins.

RT-PCR Test:

This is a more sensitive and accurate test that detects the genetic material of the virus. It is usually performed with nasal and throat swabs. RT-PCR tests are commonly conducted in designated COVID-19 centers or laboratories.

The central government has called on state governments to guarantee sufficient health facilities in response to the current situation. Individuals currently infected with the virus are reporting mild symptoms that can be effectively managed through home isolation with appropriate medical support.
