Must read

Shillong, Dec 14: The Jaiñtia National Council (JNC) on Saturday launched the ‘Save Jaintia Mission’ in order to secure the future of the next generation as well as to give the due recognition to the Jaintia people, whose aspirations have remained ignored.

“We would like to announce the launch of ‘Save Jaintia Mission’ and in this mission we have five objectives and the main purpose of this is as a path to enhance our service to the people of ‘7 Huts’, especially the Jaintia Hills,” Wanshwa suting, General Secretary of JNC, said.

He said the council has decided to launch the Save Jaintia Mission for their benefits of the next generation and for the people of Jaintia Hills at large.

Seeking immediate action from the state government on several key issues affecting the Jaiñtia community, JNC President Sambormi Lyngdoh called for reforms in the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC), citing the need for greater autonomy and self-governance. The council expressed concerns over the lack of transparency and accountability in the functioning of the JHADC.

The JNC also demanded recognition of the Pnar language as a state language, citing its importance in the cultural and historical heritage of the Jaiñtia people. The council called for the inclusion of Pnar language in the Meghalaya State Anthem and the State Language Act.

Other key demands of JNC include:
– Job Recruitment Policy: Implementation of a job recruitment policy in cement companies operating in the state, ensuring that local youth are given preference in employment opportunities.
– Boundary Dispute Resolution: Resolution to the long-standing boundary dispute between Meghalaya and Assam, citing the need for a clear demarcation of the border to prevent encroachment and disputes.
– Ban on Small-Scale Mining: A ban on small-scale mining in Meghalaya, citing the environmental and health hazards associated with such mining activities.

The JNC has urged the Meghalaya government to take immediate action on these issues, citing the need for greater transparency, accountability, and self-governance in the state.
