Jowai, Aug 23: The Jaiñtia Students’ Union – War Jaiñtia Circle (JSU – WJC) on Monday alleged that the Limestone and Boulder Exporters are running at a loss because they are forced to pay exorbitant amount at the weighbridge of the Transport Department situated at Amsarin, Sohkha along the Jowai-Amlarem-Dawki Road.
The Union alleged that an amount of about Rs. 1000 is being charged from each and every Truck (HMV) passing through this particular weighbridge and these vehicles are transporting limestone and boulders to Bangladesh through Tamabil LCS, Dawki.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Union stated that the weighbridge is also manned by Enforcement Inspectors of the Transport Department where after paying legally Rs. 200 as per the Government approved rate at the weighbridge (to which a slip is issued) another Rs. 1000 fine is levied on each truck for violating the permissible weight that a vehicle can transport (which is under 12 MT) and this Rs. 1000 is unaccounted for, to which the Union alleges corruption being practiced at the weighbridge.
The Union has also claimed that this illegal practice has incurred losses to the exporters and it could be one of those illegal weighbridges operating in the state as per the Central Government.
