Shillong, July 21: The Jaintia Students’ Union (JSU) on Friday said it is advocating for a ‘summer capital’ to be established in the Jaintia Hills region, similar to the demand made by the ACHIK in Tura as winter capital.
A statement issued by the JSU said that they believe that the Jaintia Hills region deserves to be the capital of the state because it generates significant revenue for the state through natural resources like coal and limestone, cement plants and yet it has not seen much development compared to other areas.
“The decision to relocate a capital city involves assessing the impact on various regions, the potential for balanced development, and the overall welfare of the citizens,” it added.
It is to be mentioned that the demand for ‘capitals’ comes following the winter capital demand in Tura, West Garo Hills, spearheaded by ACHIK. On Thursday, HYC had suggested for Autumn capital in West Khasi Hills district.
