Kaziranga blooms with diversity: 70 orchid species documented

Must read

Guwahati, May 15: A vibrant new chapter has opened in Assam’s Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve (KNPTR) with the documentation of 70 orchid species across 36 genera, reaffirming the UNESCO World Heritage Site’s botanical wealth.

Hetaeria anomala

KNPTR Director Sonali Ghosh revealed that the recent orchid survey recorded 46 epiphytic species (those growing on other plants) and 24 terrestrial species. The findings emerged from an intensive visual survey conducted as part of a broader initiative to systematically catalogue the park’s rich floral and faunal diversity.

“This rapid survey yielded new records, particularly from grassland and woodland habitats,” said Ghosh, emphasizing the importance of this floral exploration in understanding the ecological complexity of Kaziranga.

Cymbidium dayanum

Among the notable species documented were Acanthophippium sylhetense, Aerides odorata, Biermannia bimaculata, Bulbophyllum ornatissimum, Cleisostoma appendiculatum, Dendrobium jenkinsii, Eulophia kamarupa, Peristylus constrictus, Phalaenopsis mannii, and Zeuxine membranacea.

Coelogyne imbricata

The study was spearheaded by Khyanjeet Gogoi, a well-known orchid conservationist, alongside Range Officers Bibit Dihingia (Bagori) and Bibhuti Ranjan Gogoi (Kohora). Their efforts brought to light orchid species thriving in habitats often overlooked in earlier surveys.

Adding a unique community dimension to the initiative, the orchid survey was preceded by a conservation outreach program aimed at local youth. The Orchid and Butterfly Walk, held on April 18–19 at Panbari, saw participation from over 50 students from nearby schools and colleges, introducing them to the wonders of Kaziranga’s lesser-known biodiversity.

With such enriching discoveries and inclusive outreach, Kaziranga continues to grow not just as a sanctuary for wildlife but as a beacon for conservation education and biodiversity research.
