Kaziranga hosts first-ever skygazing night, ignites passion for astronomy and conservation

GUWAHATI, Jan 14: The serene landscape of Kaziranga transformed into a celestial wonderland as Geleki Me School hosted the region’s first-ever Skygazing Night, captivating over 300 participants across two magical evenings.

The event, supported by Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve Authority, brought together schoolchildren, local villagers, and astronomy enthusiasts from Guwahati, Jakhalabandha, Golaghat, and Bokakhat. Organized by the Geleki Village community, with expert guidance from the Pragjyotish Amateur Astronomer’s Association and the Guwahati Planetarium, the two-day program showcased the sunspot by day and the moon, Saturn, Venus, Jupiter, and Mars by night.

A star attraction was the presence of Dr. Kishore Baruah, internationally acclaimed astronomer and head of the Astronomical Conservatory at Tezpur University. Along with Mr. Sanjib Kumar Sharma and Mr. Babul Chandra Bora, Dr. Baruah inspired participants to explore the cosmos through high-powered telescopes.

Day 1 kicked off with an engaging introduction to astronomy by Mr. Sharma, setting the stage for a night of awe-inspiring stargazing. The clear skies became a canvas of discovery, igniting curiosity and joy among attendees.

Day 2 deepened the learning experience with interactive sessions led by Dr. Baruah and quizzes conducted by Dr. Jyotimoni Baruah, a founding member of the Pragjyotish Amateur Astronomers Association. Over 500 local youth from Geleki and Karbi Anglong benefitted from the event’s educational focus.

In a symbolic gesture of environmental stewardship, participants pledged to reduce light and noise pollution, protecting the region’s nocturnal wildlife.

This pioneering event not only sparked a passion for astronomy but also strengthened awareness of conserving Kaziranga’s natural beauty, blending science with conservation in an unforgettable celebration of the cosmos.
