Kaziranga National Park stands resilient amid rising flood waters

Guwahati, July 1: Undeterred by the damages to its camps that have been inundated by rising flood waters, Kaziranga National Park is well-prepared for the upcoming flood season with comprehensive measures to ensure the safety of wildlife, staff and visitors.

“Continuous monitoring and timely interventions will be prioritized to mitigate the impact of flood,” a senior park official said. The national park is a World Heritage Site and abode of one-horned rhinos.

Figures released by the park officials say 95 of the 233 camps have been inundated by flood waters. The water levels at Dhansirimukh, Numaligarh, and Nuimatighat are still above the danger level. Six camps have been vacated.

“The wooden bridge situated near Moshguli Camp in Agoratoli Range was washed away by floodwaters” the park official said adding herds of elephants have been seen moving towards Karbi Anglong through the Hati Dandi corridor.

Boats, boatlines, barricades, raincoats, rescue materials, and medicines have been procured and deployed.
Country boats, speedboats and mechanized boats have been strategically deployed in key areas for swift response.

Assam Police said on X that due to floods in Kaziranga National Park, traffic diversions will be in effect from today to protect wildlife.

On the traffic control measures, barricades have been placed on highways to control traffic and to ensure the safe passage of wildlife and Animal sensors are in place and are fully operational.

Joint patrolling by commando action groups and forest teams is being conducted regularly and Additional staff from neighbouring divisions have been deployed to intensify patrolling.

A dedicated floodwater gauge station has been set up with support from the Central Water Commission (CWC). A flood monitoring cell is being activated to provide real-time updates and coordinate rescue operations. Rescue teams and veterinary care units are on standby for immediate deployment. Health check-ups for staff and elephants have been conducted to ensure they are fit for the flood season.
