Key Accused in Online Trading Scam to Appear Before Guwahati Special CBI Court on October 30

Dibrugarh, Oct 25: Several individuals accused in the multi-crore online trading scam, including Bishal Phukan, Sumi Bora, Tarkik Bora, Amlan Bora, Ranjit Kakoti, Abhijit Chanda, Shubhan Jyoti Kurmi, and Chandan Nath, are expected to appear before the Special CBI Court in Guwahati on October 30, 2024, as part of ongoing investigations into illegal online trading activities.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) began its probe in Dibrugarh on October 12, 2024, focusing on two cases (No. 352/24 and 354/24) related to illegal online trading, registered at Dibrugarh Police Station against Bishal Phukan and others, as well as Ranjit Kakoti and others.

On Friday, at around 8:25 AM, the CBI team transported the eight accused from Dibrugarh Central Jail in a Traveller vehicle (registration number AS06AC 4818). The team briefly stopped at Barbaruah Police Station, where another case (No. 85/24) is registered against Bishal Phukan, before returning with the accused.

The scam, believed to be worth over Rs 2,200 crore, came to light on September 3, when 22-year-old Bishal Phukan, the alleged mastermind, was arrested by Dibrugarh Police. A suo-motu case was initially registered, followed by four FIRs filed by investors who had been duped.

On September 12, two of Phukan’s accomplices, actor-choreographer Sumi Borah and her photographer husband Tarkik Borah, were arrested by Assam Police’s Special Task Force. A day earlier, on September 11, Sumi Borah’s brother-in-law, Amlan Borah, was apprehended in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur district during a joint operation by Assam and Bihar Police.

The accused have been charged under sections 316(2) and 318(4) of the BNS 2023, as well as sections 21 and 23 of the Banning of Unregulated Deposit Scheme Act, 2019.
