Boko, Feb 24: Jubilation swept through the Assam-Meghalaya border areas as the Garo and Khasi communities came together to celebrate the victory of independent candidate Lurshai Kharbani in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) elections.

Kharbani, who won the Rambrai-Jyngram constituency by 2,154 votes, expressed deep gratitude to God and the people for their support. He emphasized that his win was not just personal but a collective victory for both the Garo and Khasi communities, who placed their trust in him. The constituency comprises 16,000 Garo voters and 28,000 Khasi voters.

Rambrai-Jyngram MLA Remington G. Momin, who supported Kharbani’s candidacy, also extended his thanks to the people. He assured that with Kharbani now in the KHADC, there will be focused efforts on development and welfare initiatives in the constituency.

Upon their arrival in Athiabari village, near the Assam-Meghalaya border, MLA Momin and newly elected MDC Kharbani were felicitated with traditional Garo attires by the residents of the area. The celebrations extended to Hahim in Assam and Athiabari in Meghalaya, where locals rejoiced in anticipation of positive changes under Kharbani’s leadership.

Lurshai Kharbani’s triumph came after defeating strong contenders, including:

•Bonniroy Lyngkhoi (Voice of the People Party – VPP)

•Bormanding Nonglang (Indian National Congress – INC)

•Dominik Wahlang (BJP)

•Former MLA Kimfa Sydney Marbaniang (National People’s Party – NPP)

•K. Phalastingwell Pangniang (Hills State People’s Democratic Party – HSPDP)

The Rambrai-Jyngram constituency, located in the West Khasi Hills District, shares a sensitive border with Assam. Both MLA Momin and MDC Kharbani have vowed to prioritize development in the border areas and work towards maintaining peace and harmony between the communities.
