KHADC Elections | CEM predicts VPP will not win a single seat in its four MLA constituencies

Must read

Shillong, Feb 3: Chief of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) Pyniaid Sing Syiem on Monday predicted that the Voice of the People Party (VPP) will lose miserably especially from the constituencies of its four MLAs in the February 21-ADC elections because people have learned their lessons well.

“You will witness especially from the constituencies of the four VPP MLAs (Nongkrem, Mawlai, Mawryngkneng and North Shillong), all of them will lose miserably because people have learned their lessons well. Before winning the elections, they made big promises but after being elected, they totally failed to fulfill them. Therefore, people will no doubt give a befitting reply in the upcoming ADC elections,” Syiem told reporters after filing his nomination papers from Nongthymmai constituency on a National People’s Party (NPP) ticket at ISBT, Mawiong.

He was also accompanied by leaders of the Confederation of the North East Councils representing the ten autonomous district councils (ADCs) in the North East region besides party workers and supporters. Also present were chief executive members (CEM) of Bodoland Territorial Council, Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), Tripura Territorial Council.

According to him, the influence of social media was so much that people were misled in the last elections. “But now people have learned their lessons and they will give a befitting reply,” he added.

On the VPP’s demand for Article 371, the KHADC chief said, “If people in eastern Nagaland, which already have Article 371, still have to come here to meet us because they want Sixth Schedule then please judge for yourself which is more important and more powerful for our tribal areas.”

Urging the people of Khasi-Jaintia region to cast their vote wisely, Syiem said, “I urge the people to vote for candidates, who can really work keeping in mind that a job of a MDC is a very difficult one especially in view of the proposed constitutional amendment in the parliament. Therefore, I appeal to the people that they should support candidates, who can work keeping in mind the need for us to further strengthen the Sixth Schedule to the Constitution of India for the protection of the indigenous community.”

He also appealed to all candidates to put aside party affiliation once elected to the district council and said, “People do not usually vote for a party (in the MDC elections) but they vote for an individual and what is more interesting also is that in the ADCs, party doesn’t have any impact. Though I affiliate with the NPP, the message I want to send to all candidates that once elected to the ADC, they should leave aside party affiliation and ensure people’s interest should come first.”

Syiem is currently the sitting MDC of Sohryngkham.

Asked on his decision to contest from a new constituency, the KHADC chief said, “After the sudden passing away of sitting MDC of Nongthymmai Latiplang Kharkongor, many people have come to request me to contest from the constituency. At first I rejected it because I had served Sohryngkham for many years. However, before making this decision, I have met the leaders and also we also met the sister and family of (L) Kharkongor and they  have given me their blessing and this has given me a lot of hope to shift and contest from Nongthymmai constituency. We all know had (L) Kharkongor is still alive, it would be pointless to even think of contesting from Nongthymmai because we will never win against him”
