Shillong, Sept 13: The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) held a solemn condolence meeting on Friday to honor the memory of Latiplang Kharkongor, the former Chief Executive Member (CEM) and Member of District Council (MDC) from Nongthymmai, who passed away on Thursday.
Due to the unexpected loss, the KHADC postponed its scheduled event to open offices for various Himas, which had been allocated by the Council for construction, at Mawprem. The ceremony has been rescheduled for Monday.
During the condolence service, speeches were delivered by CEM Pyniaid Sing Syiem and Deputy CEM Pynshngain N. Syiem, in the presence of Executive Members (EMs) and Chiefs from various Himas and Elaka.
The Nongthymmai MDC passed away on Thursday evening at Shillong Civil Hospital after a prolonged illness.
Kharkongor was elected to the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) four consecutive times since 2004.
He was also elected as Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the KHADC, serving from November 22, 2019 to March 20, 2020.
Kharkongor became the first independent member to be elected as KHADC CEM after the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) executive committee led by Teinwell Dkhar of the UDP was defeated in the no-confidence motion.
