KHADC supports Mawsynram Dorbar Shnong’s ban on religious activities in Mawjymbuin Cave

Shillong, Dec 21: Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) chief Pyniaid Sing Syiem on Friday said the council is extending its full support to the decision taken by the Mawsynram Dorbar Shnong to not allow any religious activities inside the Mawjymbuin cave.

He was replying to a zero hour notice moved by Nongpoh MDC Balajied Ranee on the recent demand of the Kutumba Surakshya Parishad (KSP), a Hindu organization, for reopening of the Mawjymbuin Cave within 10 days failing which they will block key roads of Meghalaya including Jorabat near Guwahati.

Slamming the KSP, Syiem said that the issue of Mawjymbuin cave is still pending before the Meghalaya High Court, which has already directed the Deputy Commissioner (DC) East Khasi Hills to set up a committee to resolve the issues.

“The threat made by KSP is itself contempt of court and this is illegal because this threat could lead to tension between the people of Meghalaya and Assam, if they start a road blockade in the border of Ri-bhoi district,” said Syiem.

The CEM of KHADC also urged the state government to take up with the Assam government requesting action against the KSP for issuing such threats.

Taking part in the Zero Hour Notice, Leader of the Opposition, Titos W Chyne said that the District Council should write to the Home Ministry regarding the threat made by Kutumba Suraksha Parishad (KSP).

Chyne said that the threat made by KSP from Assam is not only a threat to the State Government but also to the Dorbar Shnong and Hima of Mawsynram, the KHADC and the people of Meghalaya as a whole.

He said that the KHADC, which is the guardian of land in Khasi Hills region, should take cognizance of such threats made by KSP.

“We strongly condemn the demand of KSP to allow performing religious activity inside Mawjymbuin cave. We should send a strong message to KSP that Mawjymbuidn cave falls under Sixth Schedule of the Constitution and it is a land owned and maintained by the Mawsynram Dorbar Shnong and protected by the district council,” said Chyne.

He also emphasised that they are not against any religious practices but this cave is not a place of worship and there is no evidence that this cave was used by any religious groups to perform religious activities as claimed by KSP.
