SHILLONG, MAR 14: The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) has decided to urge the State government to denotify a 2015 notification, which directed that trading license from the district councils is not required.
Replying to a motion during the session on Wednesday, KHADC chief Pyniaid Sing Syiem said the notification was issued by the then Mukul Sangma government to allow big businesses to start operation before obtaining trading license from the ADCs in the state.
“We are following up this matter with the State government. We will request the government to immediately denotify the said notification,” he said.
The CEM said his executive committee is committed to further strengthen the Non-Tribal Regulations to protect the economic interest of the indigenous people.
The motion was moved by the leader of opposition Titosstarwell Chyne for discussion on the livelihood of the people within the jurisdiction of the council.
On the issue related to tourist taxis, Syiem said the council had called a meeting with the tourist taxis of Meghalaya last year based on which a letter was sent to the District Transport Officer (DTO) East Khasi Hills and other districts not to issue permits to non-tribals, who failed to obtain trading license from the council.
In regards to tourism, the CEM said that very soon the council and the government will hold a certification programme for tour guides to encourage local people to take it up as a livelihood opportunity.
He said that the council is also taking steps to address the issues faced by the farmers adding that the council has completed setting up of farmers’ markets at Mawryngkneng, Mawsynram and Pynursla.
