KHNAM not to align with any parties, term pro-Hynniewtrep as its main agenda

SHILLONG, JAN 4: The Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) on Saturday said it is not ready to work with other political parties because of its ‘pro-Hynniewtrep agendas’.

After the party’s central executive committee (CEC) meeting, working president Thomas Passah said that the reason for the party’s decision of not considering going for a pre-poll alliance ahead of the autonomous district council (ADC) elections is because its ideology and manifesto are very different.

“We have pro-Hynniewtrep agendas. The only point is that we will be preparing our manifesto consisting of very strong and effective points,” he said.

“If we work with any party, our manifesto have to be accepted in toto and hundred percent then only we may consider working with other political parties. If our agendas are not being taken on board in the common minimum program hundred percent then we will not be working with any political parties,” Passah added.

The working president also informed that in today’s meeting, all the ten candidates in the first list were called to arrive at a common point of understanding about the ideology of the party and how to go about this MDC elections .

“We have to listen to their hardships also so that we make sure we have one goal, one agenda for this MDC elections so that we ensure we go as a team and not as individual candidates,” he said.

With the absence of anti-defection law in the ADCs, Passah said, “Therefore we have tried to discuss with the candidates to show there is unity among all the candidates especially after winning, no candidates should leave the party but we will be united in one goal.”

The KHNAM has so far finalized 10 candidates for the KHADC polls, to be held on February 21. The party is likely to release its second list of candidates within 6-7 days.

“We have another 10 applications pending and the state election committee is looking into this on what to do about them. It depends on the recommendation of the SEC and the CEC will take a call likely within 7 days,” Passah said while addng that the party is not going to field from all 29 seats.

Further, the working president informed that the party would be releasing its manifesto very soon.

“The main agenda is to look into the various acts and regulations of the district council, which need immediate attention by amendment and by other ways and to show that the district council live up to the expectation of the people,” he said while adding “As of now for 72 years, we have the district council but it is very sad to see that the functioning of the district council is not upto the mark.

The various parties, various MDCs, who have been elected to the district councils for the past 72 years have not been able to live up to the spirit of the Sixth Schedule. So our objective is mainly to strengthen the district council as provided by the Sixth Schedule.”
