Shillong, April 4: The Tourism Minister of Meghalaya, Paul Lyngdoh, conducted an inspection of Khyndailad, also known as Police Bazar, on Tuesday to assess the ground situation and the difficulties faced by the public and commuters while entering the area.
After the inspection, Lyngdoh identified Police Bazar as one of the areas in Shillong city to be made into a “pedestrian zone” and a “no honking zone”. He stated that Shillong has become toxic, and pedestrians are facing difficulties in walking, which needs to be addressed. He also acknowledged that the problem of honking is a major issue, especially near hospitals, and the government is looking for ways to tackle it.
Lyngdoh also addressed concerns about the magnitude of the task at hand and stated that every task is mammoth as long as the government is sincere about it. He added that the government’s first milestone is to have a few areas of Shillong designated as pedestrian zones.
The move to make Police Bazar a pedestrian zone and no honking zone aims to reduce traffic congestion and promote the safety of pedestrians. The initiative is expected to bring significant relief to the public and commuters while entering the area.
