KSU crackdown on non-tribal workers continues, over 26 labourers sent away in West Khasi Hills

Must read

Shillong, July 16: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) on Tuesday sent away more than 26 non-tribal labourers who lacked work permits while working on the Nongstoiñ-Rambrai-Kyrshai road project.

Wanbhakupar L Nonglait, organizing secretary of the KSU – West Khasi and Rambrai Circle, reported that these labourers were employed by Spica, a company currently engaged in the NHIDCL road construction project from Nongstoiñ to Rambrai-Kyrshai.

The KSU accused the labourers of violating the Inter-State Migrant Workmen Act, 1979 (Work Permit), which has been enforced by the state government since 2011. Additionally, the KSU revealed that six of the labourers did not possess valid documentation proving their residency in India.

The KSU has issued a warning to contractors, urging them to ensure all employees possess valid work permits before engaging in any project in the state. The union has pledged to intensify checks across the West Khasi Hills District to enforce proper implementation of the Inter-State Migrant Workmen Act, 1979.

It may be mentioned that the KSU has setup three Inner Line Permit (ILP) checkpoints across the state in recent days: one in Pahammawleiñ, Ri Bhoi; another in Athiabari, West Khasi Hills; and the third in Umstain, East Jaiñtia Hills.

According to the KSU, these checkpoints aim to address the government’s continued disregard for the demands to implement the ILP and the Meghalaya Residents Safety & Security Act (MRSSA) in the State.
