Shillong, Dec 12: Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) on Monday observed ‘Black Day’ by displaying black flags and black banners as part of the North East Students’ Organization (NESO) protest against the implementation of Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 in the North East region.
The ‘Black Day’ was observed in all seven NE states.
In Shillong, KSU activists were seen putting up black flags and anti-CAA black banners in Khyndailad and other locations.
Some of them read, “11.12.2019 – when CAB turns into CAA, a black day for the indigenous people of NE, a bright day for illegal immigrants”, “Detect, delete & deport all illegal immigrant coming after 1971 instead of providing them safe sanctuary” and “North East is not a dumping ground of illegal immigrants”.
KSU chief Lambokstarwell Marngar said that the Centre’s decision to exempt only the Sixth Schedule area of Meghalaya from the purview of the CAA is just a tactic to fool the indigenous people. “However, the stand of the NESO is that the CAA should not be implemented in the entire NE region including Meghalaya,” he said.
Stating that the CAA is a mechanism to flood the NE region with influx, Marngar said, “We don’t need CAA, we need effective mechanisms to check the unabated influx of illegal immigrants into the region.”
In a statement recently, NESO chairman Samuel B Jyrwa had reminded the people of the whole of North East that on the 11th December 2019, despite the relentless opposition of the indigenous peoples of the North East against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2019, the Government of India did not pay heed and it finally, through the Rajya Sabha, passed the Draconian Law which is known as Citizenship (Amendment) Act 2019.
NESO has declared that December 11 will always be remembered as a Black Day for the whole of the North East.
