Shillong, Nov 23: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) on Thursday shut down banks, offices and institutions after they were found opening on the occasion of the Seng Kut Snem – a festival of the indigenous Khasi people celebrated every year.
Such offices and institutions had remained open despite the day being declared as a holiday by the state government.
Activists of KSU went and closed down the post office at Mairang in Eastern West Khasi Hills for functioning despite it being a holiday on account of the festival.
The KSU Shillong Mihngi Circle also met the authorities of the North Eastern Institute of Ayurveda and Homeopathy (NEIAH) and National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) and asked them to immediately close down.
Banks and offices in the Mawlai area were also closed down.
A KSU leader said that the functioning of these institutions only shows that they disrespect the indigenous people of the state. He also warned all offices and institutions that failed to respect special occasions and festivals observed by the indigenous people.
