Nongpoh, Oct 19: Leaders of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), North Khasi Hills District Unit, met with the Additional Deputy Commissioner and Member Secretary of the District Selection Committee (DSC), Ri Bhoi District, on Friday. During the meeting, the KSU handed over a 15-point charter of demands aimed at ensuring a transparent and efficient recruitment process.

The KSU delegation was led by Banjop Maring, Chairman of the Employment Monitoring Cell, along with other members. They discussed their concerns with DSC Member Secretary Raja Brahma and proposed various reforms to enhance transparency in the recruitment process.

The 15-point charter includes key recommendations such as the appointment of adequately qualified non-political non-official vice Chairman and non-official members of the DSC, as well as the annual declaration of assets and liabilities by public servants. Additionally, the charter emphasizes that applicants must be domiciled in Meghalaya and possess knowledge of the Khasi language to apply for any posts under the DSC in Khasi and Jaintia Hills.

Other points include the avoidance of adhoc, contractual, or casual appointments, the publication of an annual calendar with key examination dates by the DSC, and the public disclosure of marks obtained by all candidates. The KSU also highlighted the importance of maintaining the same roll numbers throughout the recruitment process, providing candidates with carbon copies of their OMR sheets, releasing answer keys after exams, and allowing a specific time frame for candidates to challenge the answer key.

Further, the charter calls for the completion of the recruitment process within six months of the advertisement date, the abolition of personal interviews for Grade B, C, and D posts, and the annual publication of reports by the DSC. To ensure integrity, the union urged that question papers remain highly confidential to prevent leaks. Lastly, the KSU advocated for the creation of a grievance cell within the DSC and the introduction of computer-based testing for future recruitment processes.

Speaking to the media, Banjop Maring expressed the union’s deep concern over the limited job opportunities for the youth in the state. He emphasized that the KSU, through its Central Executive Committee, had formulated the 15-point charter to push for greater transparency in recruitment across all District Selection Committees.

“We hope that the DSC in Ri Bhoi District will implement these recommendations for the betterment of job seekers in the district and across the state,” Maring said.
