Shillong, July 19: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has announced plans to continue and intensify checks on non-tribal labourers if the government fails to address their demands for implementing a proper influx mechanism, particularly the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act, 2016.
It may be noted that Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma called the KSU for talks on Friday after the union conducted checks on the work permits of non-tribal labourers across the Khasi-Jaintia Hills over the past two months.
Speaking after the meeting with the Chief Minister, KSU President Lambokstarwell Marngar expressed dissatisfaction with the talks and stated that the checks will continue.
Marngar explained that the work permit is an abbreviation of the Interstate Migrant Workmen Act of 1979, which was amended in 2011. However, in 2020, the government introduced the Work Permit Act, which the KSU claims is too weak to combat influx effectively. The KSU has suggested strengthening the Act to incorporate provisions from the Central Government Act. The Chief Minister said he would examine the matter, according to Marngar.
The KSU President reiterated that while the Inner Line Permit (ILP) has not been obtained, the government should for now implement the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act, 2016.
