KSU warns of stern action if harassment of Khasis in Manipur continues

Must read

Shillong, April 3: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) on Monday sent a strong message on the alleged assault of Khasis living at Khedagar Khasi village in Manipur on Sunday.

Following the information received by the KSU on the incident at Khedagar Khasi village, KSU general secretary Donald Thabah informed that the union has reached out to the All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU).

The KSU leader informed that the AMSU has assured to take up the matter seriously so that no further harassment is meted out to the Khasis living in the area.

However, if the harassment continues on the Khasis living in Manipur, the KSU will take stern action against the people involved, the KSU leader warned.

It may be mentioned that the KSU met Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh on May 6 last year in Imphal over alleged injustices being meted out to members of the Khasi community living in Khedagar village. Thabah also exhorted the Manipur CM to ensure that the Khasi community there are protected from any threat or intimidation.

Thabah lamented the action of the forest department of Manipur, which has erected signboards prohibiting Khasis from cultivating in their own lands encroached by the Bengalis and Meiteis.

It said the Khasis in Manipur had been residing in their present location since pre-independence years (1939-1940) with a single village named as Khedagar Khasi village.
